A = Z + N

🧪 Roots of Atomic Theory: From Philosophy to Science
The journey of the atom through time: Democritus · Aristotle · Dalton
Atomic theory is the foundation for understanding the structure of matter. The idea that everything in the universe is made of tiny, indivisible particles emerged over 2400 years ago. This idea evolved through Greek philosophers and returned strongly with the English chemist John Dalton in the early 19th century. This page covers the key milestones: Democritus, the pioneer; Aristotle, whose long-lasting influence delayed atomic acceptance; and John Dalton, the founder of modern atomic theory.
Historical Roots of the Atomic Idea
Leucippus
Greek philosopher (5th century BC) considered the first to propose the existence of indivisible primary particles called "atoms".
Democritus
Student of Leucippus who systematically developed atomic theory: atoms are eternal, vary in shape and size, and move in a vacuum to form the world.
Aristotle & Elements
Rejected atomism and adopted the four-element theory (earth, water, air, fire), dominating scientific thought for 2000 years.
Dalton (1803)
Revived atomism with experimental methods, established laws of definite and multiple proportions, and the first atomic weight table.
In short: The true roots of atomic theory go back to Greek thought (Democritus), but Aristotle's strong rejection caused the idea to disappear for centuries, until Dalton rebuilt it on chemical and scientific foundations.
🏛️ Pioneers of Atomic Theory
Democritus
c. 460 – 370 BC
- Atoms (Atomos): Matter is composed of small, indivisible particles that are indestructible and uncreated.
- Different atoms: Vary in shape, size, and arrangement.
- Vacuum and motion: Atoms move in empty space.
- Materialist philosophy: All phenomena arise from mechanical interactions of atoms.
Revolutionary vision: First to picture the world as an atomic composition
Aristotle
384 – 322 BC
- Rejected atomism: Considered the idea of void and indivisible atoms illogical.
- Four elements theory: Earth, water, air, fire.
- Huge influence: His ideas dominated for over 2000 years.
- Continuity of matter: Matter is continuous and infinitely divisible.
Though his view was incorrect, his long influence delayed atomic progress.
John Dalton
1766 – 1844
- Scientific revival of atomism: Established the foundations of modern atomic theory in 1803.
- Atoms of an element are identical: Each element consists of identical atoms with the same mass.
- Law of multiple proportions: The ratios of element masses are simple whole numbers.
- Relative atomic weights: First table of atomic weights.
Dalton is the founder of modern atomic chemistry.
Quick Comparison: Simple Overview

Summary of roots: Democritus provided the first philosophical vision of the atom, then Aristotle led thought away from it for nearly two millennia, and finally Dalton established the scientific atomic theory.
Introduction: Law of Conservation of Mass
The Law of Conservation of Mass states that the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products in any closed chemical reaction. This law was formulated by Antoine Lavoisier in the 18th century, but the microscopic explanation came from John Dalton through his atomic theory.
How does Dalton's theory explain mass conservation?
According to Dalton, a chemical reaction is simply a rearrangement of atoms without changing their identity or mass. Imagine atoms as Lego pieces; you can disassemble a structure and reassemble it in a new way, but the total number and weight of pieces remain constant.

1Main idea: Compare the methods used by Greek philosophers and Dalton to study the atom.
✍️ Comparison:- Greek philosophers: Used philosophical reasoning and mental contemplation, no experimental work.
- Dalton: Used experimental methods and quantitative measurements, based on chemical laws.
📌 Summary: Greeks used speculative philosophy, Dalton established experimental science of the atom.
2Define the atom in your own words.
🧪 Definition of the atom: The atom is the smallest structural unit of a chemical element, retaining its chemical properties. It consists of a positive nucleus and an electron cloud.
3Summarize Dalton's atomic theory.
📜 Dalton's Atomic Theory:- Matter is composed of indivisible atoms.
- Atoms of the same element are identical.
- Compounds are formed by atoms combining in simple whole-number ratios.
- Chemical reactions are rearrangements of atoms.
4Explain how Dalton's atomic theory relates to the Law of Conservation of Mass.
⚖️ Relationship: The Law of Conservation of Mass states mass is constant in reactions. Dalton's explanation: atoms are neither created nor destroyed, only rearranged, so total mass remains constant.
5Apply: Six atoms of element "A" combine with eight atoms of element "B" to form six particles of a compound. How many atoms of "A" and "B" are in each particle? Are all atoms used?
🧮 Analysis: Each particle contains 1 atom of A and 1 atom of B, with 2 atoms of B remaining unused. The formula is AB.

🍇 Thomson's Atomic Model (Plum Pudding)
After discovering the electron, Thomson proposed that the atom is a positively charged sphere with electrons embedded in it, like raisins in a pudding.
⚖️ How does Thomson's experiment relate to the Law of Conservation of Mass and Dalton's theory?

⚛️ Discovery of the Proton and Neutron
A short journey to understand the components of the atomic nucleus
➕ The Proton
📅 1919 👨🔬 Ernest Rutherford
Rutherford directed alpha particles toward nitrogen gas and observed the emission of light nuclei carrying a positive charge, identical to the hydrogen nucleus. He named them protons.
⚛️ Protons determine the identity of the chemical element (atomic number).
⚪ The Neutron
📅 1932 👨🔬 James Chadwick
Chadwick used alpha particles to bombard beryllium, producing neutral radiation with high penetrating power. He proved it consisted of neutral particles with mass close to the proton, and named them neutrons.
🔘 Neutrons are essential for nuclear cohesion and preventing proton repulsion.
⚛️ Isotopes and Mass Number
Dalton was not entirely correct about atoms being indivisible, nor that all atoms of an element are completely identical. All atoms of an element have the same number of protons and number of electrons, but the number of neutrons may differ.
🔬 What are Isotopes?
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but differ in number of neutrons are called isotopes. For example, potassium has three types, all containing 19 protons and 19 electrons, but different neutron counts: 20, 21, and 22 neutrons.
💡 Heavier isotopes have more neutrons → greater mass. However, their chemical behavior is identical because it depends only on the number of electrons.
📐 Mass Number and Isotope Notation
Mass Number (A) = total number of protons (atomic number) + number of neutrons in the nucleus.
A = Z + N

🧪 Atomic Mass Problems
Problem 18: Boron
Boron has two natural isotopes:
Boron-10 (abundance = 19.8%) mass = 10.013 amu
Boron-11 (abundance = 80.2%) mass = 11.009 amu
Calculate the atomic mass of boron.
✏️ Solution method:
Atomic mass = (fraction of isotope 1 × its mass) + (fraction of isotope 2 × its mass)
Fraction B-10 = 0.198, Fraction B-11 = 0.802
= (0.198 × 10.013) + (0.802 × 11.009)
= 1.982574 + 8.829218 = 10.811792 amu
✅ Atomic mass of boron = 10.81 amu
Problem 19: Nitrogen
Nitrogen has two isotopes: Nitrogen-14 and Nitrogen-15.
The atomic mass of nitrogen is 14.007 amu.
Which isotope is more abundant in nature? Explain your answer.
✅ The more abundant isotope is Nitrogen-14 (¹⁴N).
🧠 Explanation: Because the atomic mass (14.007) is much closer to the mass of ¹⁴N (14.003 amu) than to ¹⁵N (15.000 amu). The abundance of ¹⁴N is about 99.6%.
Problem 23: Copper (Cu)

Why is the Atomic Number Fundamental for Understanding Elements?
Before the concept of atomic number emerged, scientists like Dalton believed that atoms of an element were identical but didn't know about protons. In the early 20th century, Henri Becquerel and Rutherford discovered that the nucleus contains protons, and it became clear that atomic number determines the element's identity, not its mass. Thanks to atomic number, we were able to arrange the modern periodic table.
📖 Summary: The atomic number is not just a number; it is the reason for the diversity of matter in the universe; from atomic number 1 (Hydrogen) to 118 (Oganesson), we get all known elements.
Impossible! The atomic number is unique to each element, like a "nuclear fingerprint".
Atomic number (Z) = number of protons → element identity — each element has a distinct atomic number different from all others.

🧪 Roots of Atomic Theory: From Philosophy to Science
🏛️ Pioneers of Atomic Theory
Democritus
- Atoms (Atomos): Matter is composed of small, indivisible particles that are indestructible and uncreated.
- Different atoms: Vary in shape, size, and arrangement.
- Vacuum and motion: Atoms move in empty space.
- Materialist philosophy: All phenomena arise from mechanical interactions of atoms.
Aristotle
- Rejected atomism: Considered the idea of void and indivisible atoms illogical.
- Four elements theory: Earth, water, air, fire.
- Huge influence: His ideas dominated for over 2000 years.
- Continuity of matter: Matter is continuous and infinitely divisible.
John Dalton
- Scientific revival of atomism: Established the foundations of modern atomic theory in 1803.
- Atoms of an element are identical: Each element consists of identical atoms with the same mass.
- Law of multiple proportions: The ratios of element masses are simple whole numbers.
- Relative atomic weights: First table of atomic weights.
Quick Comparison: Simple Overview
Democritus
- ✔️ Matter = atoms + void
- ✔️ Atoms eternal, different shapes
- ✔️ Metaphysical/philosophical idea
Aristotle
- ❌ Rejected void and atoms
- 🌍 Four elements + humors
- ⏳ Dominated for centuries, hindered atomic progress
Dalton
- 🔬 Experimental proof (chemical laws)

⚛️ Journey into the Atom: Philosophers & Dalton
- Greek philosophers: Used philosophical reasoning and mental contemplation, no experimental work.
- Dalton: Used experimental methods and quantitative measurements, based on chemical laws.
📌 Summary: Greeks used speculative philosophy, Dalton established experimental science of the atom.
- Matter is composed of indivisible atoms.
- Atoms of the same element are identical.
- Compounds are formed by atoms combining in simple whole-number ratios.
- Chemical reactions are rearrangements of atoms.
Democritus
- Philosophical approach
- Atom indivisible
- Different shapes and sizes
- No experimental evidence
Dalton
- Quantitative experimental approach
- Atoms of an element identical

🔬 How Can We "See" Atoms Simply?
Atoms are too small to be seen with an optical microscope. But the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) reveals them. Invented by Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer in 1981.

⚡ Cathode Ray Tube | Thomson's Experiment
🔬 Discovery of the electron (1897) – J.J. Thomson
In this interactive simulation, when voltage is applied across the deflection plates, the electron beam deflects toward the positive plate. This proves that cathode rays consist of negatively charged particles, which Thomson called "electrons".
🔬 Millikan's Oil Drop Experiment
🍇 Thomson's Atomic Model (Plum Pudding)
After discovering the electron, Thomson proposed that the atom is a positively charged sphere with electrons embedded in it, like raisins in a pudding.
⚖️ How does Thomson's experiment relate to the Law of Conservation of Mass and Dalton's theory?
The Law of Conservation of Mass is not contradicted by the discovery of the electron. Electrons are part of the atom; during reactions they transfer or share without being destroyed.
- Thomson discovered the electron using the cathode ray tube.
- He proved that atoms contain negatively charged particles smaller than the atom itself.
- His model: a positive sphere with electrons inside (plum pudding).
🥇 Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment
🔬 Experimental Setup
- Source: Radioactive element (Radium)
- Lead shield to collimate the beam
- Very thin gold foil
- ZnS phosphorescent detector
📊 Key Results
- Most alpha particles passed straight through
- A small fraction were deflected at large angles
- A tiny fraction bounced back
🧠 Conclusions: Atomic Nucleus
- The atom is not a uniform mass
- Mass and positive charge are concentrated in a tiny nucleus
- Electrons orbit the nucleus in a large void
⚛️ Discovery of the Proton and Neutron
➕ The Proton
📅 1919 👨🔬 Ernest Rutherford
Rutherford directed alpha particles toward nitrogen gas and observed the emission of light nuclei carrying a positive charge, identical to the hydrogen nucleus. He named them protons.
⚪ The Neutron
📅 1932 👨🔬 James Chadwick
Chadwick used alpha particles to bombard beryllium, producing neutral radiation with high penetrating power. He proved it consisted of neutral particles with mass close to the proton, and named them neutrons.
📐 Mass Number and Isotope Notation
Mass Number (A) = total number of protons (atomic number) + number of neutrons in the nucleus.
(A: mass number, Z: number of protons, N: number of neutrons)
🧪 Example: Copper
🔘 Cu-63
🔘 Cu-65
🍌 Another Example: Potassium
Potassium exists in nature as three isotopes, all containing 19 protons (atomic number 19) but different numbers of neutrons.

🧪 Atomic Mass Problems
Boron-10 (abundance = 19.8%) mass = 10.013 amu
Boron-11 (abundance = 80.2%) mass = 11.009 amu
Calculate the atomic mass of boron.
✏️ Solution method:
Atomic mass = (fraction of isotope 1 × its mass) + (fraction of isotope 2 × its mass)
Fraction B-10 = 0.198, Fraction B-11 = 0.802
The atomic mass of nitrogen is 14.007 amu.
Which isotope is more abundant in nature? Explain your answer.
🧠 Explanation: Because the atomic mass (14.007) is much closer to the mass of ¹⁴N (14.003 amu) than to ¹⁵N (15.000 amu). The abundance of ¹⁴N is about 99.6%.
Cu-63 : abundance = 69.2% , mass = 62.930 amu
Cu-65 : abundance = 30.8% , mass = 64.928 amu
