N = (6.022×10²³ × 1.4×10³) / 56 = 1.5055 × 10²⁵
N = 26 × 1.5055 × 10²⁵ = 3.9143 × 10²⁶
n = 0.4 / (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹) = 2.5 × 10¹⁸

(Charging by Friction)
(Van de Graaff generators)

(Induction charging)

🔬 Fundamental Forces & Electric Charge
The four fundamental forces in nature:
Gravity, Electromagnetic force, Strong nuclear force, Weak nuclear force
These four forces control everything in the universe by the Creator's power
Can these forces be unified?
Useful Information:
Any atom consists of a nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons
Negatively charged electrons orbit around it in elliptical paths
Is the atom electrically neutral?
Number of protons = Number of electrons
Proton charge = Electron charge
𝑞𝑒 = 𝑞𝑝 = 1.602 X 10-19 C
Electrons are what are gained or lost
Charged bodies contain protons and electrons but their numbers may differ
A negatively charged body has gained electrons (electrons > protons)
A positively charged body has lost electrons (protons > electrons)
The charge of a body can be expressed by knowing the number of protons and electrons in the body through the following relation
Test Yourself
Test Yourself
Charge is conserved in a closed system
When rubbing a piece of wool with an ebonite rod, the wool loses electrons and becomes positively charged, and the ebonite rod gains electrons and becomes negatively charged
The number of electrons lost by the wool = The number of electrons gained by the ebonite rod
(In a closed system)

Charge is Quantized
Millikan proved that the oil drop is charged with integer multiples of the electron charge
Through Millikan's apparatus, the scientist was able to calculate the charge of the oil drop
He divided the charge by the elementary charge and the result was an integer, confirming that charge is quantized
Self-Study (Millikan's Oil Drop Experiment)
Formulas Used:
1. Electric Field (E) = V/d
2. Volume of oil drop (sphere) V = (4/3)πr³
3. Mass (m) = Density (ρ) × Volume (V)
4. Charge (q) = (m × g × d) / V
5. Number of electrons (n) = q / e (where e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C)
Self-Study
When examining protons and neutrons, they were found to contain quarks with very small mass, bound together by gluons
Down quarks with negative charge
Up quarks with positive charge
-(1/3)e
+(2/3)e
Solution: .............................
The proton contains 2 up quarks and 1 down quark. Determine the charge of the proton
Solution: .............................
The neutron contains 1 up quark and 2 down quarks. Determine the charge of the neutron
Worked Example
An iron block of mass 1.4 kg has a negative charge of 0.4 C. What is the fraction of electrons it gained?
Given that the molar mass of iron is 56 g and its atomic number is 26
Solution method:
1 mole of any substance contains Avogadro's number of atoms: 6.022 X 1023 atoms
1 mole of iron has a mass of 56 grams
First, calculate the number of atoms in the 1.4 kg mass
N = (6.022×10²³ × 1.4×10³) / 56 = 1.5055 × 10²⁵
Atomic number is the number of protons in the atom (number of protons = number of electrons) for iron = 26
Number of electrons in the 1.4 kg mass
N = 26 × 1.5055 × 10²⁵ = 3.9143 × 10²⁶
The fraction of gained electrons = number of gained electrons / total number of electrons
To calculate the number of gained electrons
n = 0.4 / (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹) = 2.5 × 10¹⁸
To calculate the fraction of gained electrons
(2.5 × 10¹⁸) / (3.9143 × 10²⁶) = 6.38 × 10⁻⁹
Conductors, Insulators, Semiconductors, and Superconductors
Conductors: Materials capable of conducting electric current because they contain free electrons that can move within the material, such as copper, iron, and aluminum
Insulators: Materials incapable of conducting electric current because their electrons are bound to the nucleus and cannot move within the material, such as wood, plastic, and ebonite
Semiconductors: Materials capable of conducting current under special conditions, such as germanium and silicon (Group 14 elements)
These materials contain four valence electrons. Atoms bond to each other with covalent bonds at absolute zero temperature (-273°C)
At absolute zero, they cannot conduct, but at room temperature, bonds break and they become able to conduct
When doping semiconductors with impurities from Group 15 elements (N-type - donors)
One impurity atom is added per million original atoms, and the electrons become charge carriers
When doping semiconductors with impurities from Group 13 elements (P-type - acceptors)
One impurity atom is added per million original atoms, and the holes become charge carriers
Interactive Semiconductor Experiment
Semiconductors are materials capable of conducting electric current under special conditions, such as germanium and silicon (Group 14 elements). These materials contain four valence electrons, and atoms bond to each other with covalent bonds.
Pure Semiconductor (Silicon or Germanium)
At absolute zero temperature (-273°C), semiconductors cannot conduct. But at room temperature, some covalent bonds break and they become able to conduct.
At low temperature: All electrons are bound in covalent bonds and there are no free charge carriers.
N-type Semiconductor
When doping semiconductors with impurities from Group 15 elements (such as phosphorus or arsenic - donors), one impurity atom is added per million original atoms. The extra electrons become the main charge carriers.
Impurity atoms from Group 15 provide an extra electron that becomes a free charge carrier, increasing the material's conductivity.
P-type Semiconductor
When doping semiconductors with impurities from Group 13 elements (such as boron - acceptors), one impurity atom is added per million original atoms. The holes (empty positions for electrons) become the main charge carriers.
Impurity atoms from Group 13 lack one electron, creating holes that behave as effective positive charge carriers.
Superconductors:
Materials whose resistance to current flow is almost zero. This type of material only works at very low temperatures, such as titanium
Types of Electric Charging
Charging by Friction
Scientific Explanation:
This phenomenon occurs when two different materials are rubbed together, transferring electrons from one material to another due to the difference in the materials' tendency to lose or gain electrons.
Electromagnetic Interaction:
- The material with higher electron affinity (such as wool) loses electrons
- The material with lower electron affinity (such as plastic) gains electrons
Practical Applications:
- Manufacturing Van de Graaff generators
- Electrostatic painting systems
- Air purification devices from suspended particles
- Educational science experiments to understand static electricity
Main Purpose:
Generating static electric charges by transferring electrons between materials, maintaining the acquired charge for a relatively long period.
Charging by Induction
Definition:
It is the process of separating electric charges in a conductive body without direct contact with the charged body, where the electric charges in the neutral body are affected by the electric field of the charged body.
Steps:
- Bring a charged body (such as a negative rod) near a neutral conductor
- Polarization occurs in the neutral body (positive charges move closer, negative charges move away)
- Connect the conductor to the ground (grounding)
- Remove the grounding connection then move the charged body away
- The conductor becomes charged with a charge opposite to the inducing charge
Practical Example:
When bringing a negatively charged balloon near an aluminum can:
- Positive charges in the can are attracted toward the balloon
- Negative charges move to the far end
- If the can is grounded, negative charges transfer to the ground
- After removing the balloon, the can remains positively charged
Key Properties:
- Does not require direct contact between the two bodies
- The resulting charge is opposite to the inducing charge
- Temporary change in charge distribution occurs
- Depends on the law of conservation of electric charge
Comparison between Conductors and Insulators
Property
Conductors
Insulators
Electron Movement
Free electrons
Electrons bound to atoms
Electrical Conductivity
✅ Excellent electrical conduction
❌ Does not conduct electricity
Thermal Conductivity
✅ Good heat conduction
❌ Poor heat conduction
Examples
Copper, silver, aluminum
Wood, glass, rubber
Surface Charging
Charges spread on the surface
Charges remain in place
Uses
Electrical wiring
Insulating electrical wires
Scientific Explanation:
Conductors: Contain free electrons in the outer shell of their atoms, allowing easy transfer of electric charges through the material.
Insulators: Electrons are strongly bound to the nucleus, preventing their free movement and thus preventing the flow of electric current.
Charge Conservation Law:
When charging a conductor:
- Charges move to the outer surface
- Charges are distributed evenly
Environmental Impact:
Insulators play a crucial role in:
- Preventing electric shocks
- Maintaining current stability
- Reducing energy loss
When a charged body is brought near a conductor, charge redistribution occurs. In an insulator, the center of positive charge shifts away from the negative charge without movement.
Charging an Electroscope by Induction (Negative Charge)
Step 1: Bring the charged body near
Bring a positively charged conductor (+) near the electroscope disk.
→ Charge redistribution occurs (electrostatic induction)
Step 2: Grounding (touch the base)
When touching the base, free electrons transfer from the ground to the electroscope
→ The electroscope gets rid of positive charges
Step 3: Remove the source then the finger
After removing the grounding and moving the charged body away:
→ The electroscope becomes charged with an equivalent negative charge
Practical Applications
- Charging objects in electrostatic painting systems
- Document copying in photocopiers
- Air purification systems from suspended particles
- Charging balloons in educational science experiments
Basic Conservation Law
ΣQ before = ΣQ after (Conservation of electric charge)
It is a process of charging a conductor without contact
Steps to charge an electroscope with a negative charge by induction:
Bring a positively charged conductor near the electroscope (charge redistribution occurs)
Touch the base of the electroscope with your hand (grounding), free charges not affected by attraction force drain away
Remove your hand then move the charged body away from the electroscope, it becomes negatively charged
Charging by Contact
Scientific Explanation:
The process of transferring electric charge through direct contact between a charged body and a neutral one, where charges move until the system reaches electrostatic equilibrium.
Transfer Mechanism:
- If the charged body is negative: Excess electrons transfer to the neutral body
- If the charged body is positive: It pulls electrons from the neutral body
Practical Applications:
- Electrical grounding systems
- Rechargeable battery charging
- Wireless power transfer systems (through direct contact)
- Voltage measuring devices
Main Purpose:
Distributing electric charges equally between contacting bodies, with the ability to control the amount and type of transferred charge.

(Charging by Friction)
(Van de Graaff generators)
(Induction charging)
(Insulators) |
|---|---|---|

(Charging by Contact)

🔬 Fundamental Forces & Electric Charge
|
The four fundamental forces in nature: |
|
|
Any atom consists of a nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons
Negatively charged electrons orbit around it in elliptical paths
Is the atom electrically neutral?
Number of protons = Number of electrons
Proton charge = Electron charge
𝑞𝑒 = 𝑞𝑝 = 1.602 X 10-19 C
When rubbing a piece of wool with an ebonite rod, the wool loses electrons and becomes positively charged, and the ebonite rod gains electrons and becomes negatively charged
The number of electrons lost by the wool = The number of electrons gained by the ebonite rod
(In a closed system)

N = (6.022×10²³ × 1.4×10³) / 56 = 1.5055 × 10²⁵
Atomic number is the number of protons in the atom (number of protons = number of electrons) for iron = 26
Number of electrons in the 1.4 kg mass
N = 26 × 1.5055 × 10²⁵ = 3.9143 × 10²⁶
The fraction of gained electrons = number of gained electrons / total number of electrons
To calculate the number of gained electrons
n = 0.4 / (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹) = 2.5 × 10¹⁸
To calculate the fraction of gained electrons
(2.5 × 10¹⁸) / (3.9143 × 10²⁶) = 6.38 × 10⁻⁹ Conductors, Insulators, Semiconductors, and Superconductors
| Property | Conductors | Insulators |
|---|---|---|
| Electron Movement | Free electrons | Electrons bound to atoms |
| Electrical Conductivity | ✅ Excellent electrical conduction | ❌ Does not conduct electricity |
| Thermal Conductivity | ✅ Good heat conduction | ❌ Poor heat conduction |
| Examples | Copper, silver, aluminum | Wood, glass, rubber |
| Surface Charging | Charges spread on the surface | Charges remain in place |
| Uses | Electrical wiring | Insulating electrical wires |
Scientific Explanation:
Conductors: Contain free electrons in the outer shell of their atoms, allowing easy transfer of electric charges through the material.
Insulators: Electrons are strongly bound to the nucleus, preventing their free movement and thus preventing the flow of electric current.
Charge Conservation Law:
When charging a conductor:
- Charges move to the outer surface
- Charges are distributed evenly
Environmental Impact:
Insulators play a crucial role in:
- Preventing electric shocks
- Maintaining current stability
- Reducing energy loss
When a charged body is brought near a conductor, charge redistribution occurs. In an insulator, the center of positive charge shifts away from the negative charge without movement.
Charging an Electroscope by Induction (Negative Charge)
Step 1: Bring the charged body near
Bring a positively charged conductor (+) near the electroscope disk.
→ Charge redistribution occurs (electrostatic induction)
Step 2: Grounding (touch the base)
When touching the base, free electrons transfer from the ground to the electroscope
→ The electroscope gets rid of positive charges
Step 3: Remove the source then the finger
After removing the grounding and moving the charged body away:
→ The electroscope becomes charged with an equivalent negative charge
Practical Applications
- Charging objects in electrostatic painting systems
- Document copying in photocopiers
- Air purification systems from suspended particles
- Charging balloons in educational science experiments
Basic Conservation Law
ΣQ before = ΣQ after (Conservation of electric charge)
It is a process of charging a conductor without contact
Steps to charge an electroscope with a negative charge by induction:
Bring a positively charged conductor near the electroscope (charge redistribution occurs)
Touch the base of the electroscope with your hand (grounding), free charges not affected by attraction force drain away
Remove your hand then move the charged body away from the electroscope, it becomes negatively charged
Charging by Contact
Scientific Explanation:
The process of transferring electric charge through direct contact between a charged body and a neutral one, where charges move until the system reaches electrostatic equilibrium.
Transfer Mechanism:
- If the charged body is negative: Excess electrons transfer to the neutral body
- If the charged body is positive: It pulls electrons from the neutral body
Practical Applications:
- Electrical grounding systems
- Rechargeable battery charging
- Wireless power transfer systems (through direct contact)
- Voltage measuring devices
Main Purpose:
Distributing electric charges equally between contacting bodies, with the ability to control the amount and type of transferred charge.
