Friction Forces

(Static Friction)
(Kinetic Friction)

(Static Friction)

\[ f_s = \mu_s \times N \]

(Kinetic Friction)

\[ f_k = \mu_k \times N \]

\[ f_{friction} = \mu \times N \]

⚡ Friction Forces in Physics

Static Friction - Kinetic Friction - Coefficient of Friction - Practical Applications

📖 Introduction

Friction force is the resistance to motion when one object moves over another surface.
Friction is not a fundamental force like gravity or electromagnetism; it is the result of electromagnetic attraction between charged particles of two surfaces in contact.

Friction

Direction of friction: Always opposite to the motion of the object, parallel to the surface.

🔹 Types of Friction:
There are two main types of friction:
1. Static Friction
2. Kinetic Friction

📐 Static Friction

Definition: The force that opposes the initiation of motion between two non-moving surfaces.

\[ f_s = \mu_s \times N \]

Where:

  • \( f_s \) = Static friction force (N)
  • \( \mu_s \) = Coefficient of static friction (dimensionless)
  • \( N \) = Normal force (N)

🔹 Factors Affecting Static Friction:

  • Coefficient of static friction (\( \mu_s \)): Depends on the nature of the contacting surfaces.
  • Normal force (N): Greater normal force means greater static friction.
  • Surface nature: Roughness increases friction, smoothness decreases it.

🔹 Practical Applications:

  • Preventing furniture from sliding
  • Car brakes when stopping
  • Climbing on inclined surfaces
  • Gripping objects with hands

📐 Kinetic Friction

Definition: The force that opposes the motion between two relatively moving surfaces.

\[ f_k = \mu_k \times N \]

Where:

  • \( f_k \) = Kinetic friction force (N)
  • \( \mu_k \) = Coefficient of kinetic friction (dimensionless)
  • \( N \) = Normal force (N)

🔹 Factors Affecting Kinetic Friction:

  • Coefficient of kinetic friction (\( \mu_k \)): Depends on the nature of the surfaces.
  • Normal force (N): Greater normal force means greater kinetic friction.
  • Speed of the object: In some cases, speed affects kinetic friction.

🔹 Practical Applications:

  • Generating heat in car brakes
  • Writing with a pen on paper
  • Conveyor belts in factories
  • Rubbing hands to generate heat
💡 Important Note:
Kinetic friction is usually less than maximum static friction for the same surfaces.
\( f_k < f_{s,max} \)

📐 Coefficient of Friction

Coefficient of friction (μ) is a dimensionless number that determines the friction force between two solid bodies. It depends on the nature of the contacting surfaces.

🔹 Types of Friction Coefficients:

  • Static friction coefficient (\( \mu_s \)):
Arises when the body is at rest. Example: preventing a box from sliding on an inclined surface.
  • Kinetic friction coefficient (\( \mu_k \)):
Arises when the body is in motion. Example: stopping a moving car.
\[ f_{friction} = \mu \times N \]

🔹 Typical Values:

Material \( \mu_s \) (Static) \( \mu_k \) (Kinetic)
Rubber on Asphalt 1.0 0.8
Wood on Wood 0.5 0.3
Metal on Metal (dry) 0.6 0.4
Ice on Ice 0.1 0.03

🔹 Practical Applications:

  • 🎮 Designing car tires (increasing friction for control)
  • 🏗️ Calculating safe slope angles on roads
  • ⛸️ Improving sports shoe performance
  • 🔧 Reducing energy consumption in machines (by reducing friction)
  • 🚦 Designing vehicle braking systems
💡 Note:
Static friction coefficient is usually greater than kinetic friction coefficient for the same surfaces:
\( \mu_s > \mu_k \)

📊 Comparison: Static vs Kinetic Friction

State Body at rest Body in motion
Maximum value \( f_{s,max} = \mu_s N \) \( f_k = \mu_k N \) (constant)

🔹 Important Notes

  • 🔸 Static friction force has a variable value up to a maximum.
  • 🔸 Kinetic friction force is approximately constant (independent of speed).
  • 🔸 \( \mu_s > \mu_k \) always for the same surfaces.
  • 🔸 Friction force does not depend on contact area.
  • 🔸 Friction force depends on normal force and surface nature.
