(Elastic Collision)
\[K_{i1}+K_{i2}=K_{f1}+K_{f2}\]
\[\frac{1}{2}m_1{v_{i1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2{v_{i2}}^2=\frac{1}{2}m_1{v_{f1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2{v_{f2}}^2\]
\[\vec P_{i1}+\vec P_{i2}=\vec P_{f1}+\vec P_{f2}\]
\[m_1.\vec {v_{i1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{i2}}=m_1.\vec {v_{f1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{f2}}\]
(Inelastic Collision)
\[K_{i1}+K_{i2}>K_{f1}+K_{f2}\]
\[\frac{1}{2}m_1.{v_{i1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2.{v_{i2}}^2>\frac{1}{2}m_1.{v_{f1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2.{v_{f2}}^2\]
\[\vec P_{i1}+\vec P_{i2}=\vec P_{f1}+\vec P_{f2}\]
\[m_1.\vec {v_{i1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{i2}}=m_1.\vec {v_{f1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{f2}}\]
(Perfectly Inelastic Collision)
\[K_{i1}+K_{i2}>K_{f12}\]
\[\frac{1}{2}m_1.{v_{i1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2.{v_{i2}}^2>\frac{1}{2}(m_1+m_2).{v_{f12}}^2\]
\[\vec P_{i1}+\vec P_{i2}=\vec P_{f12}\]
\[m_1.\vec {v_{i1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{i2}}=(m_1+m_2).\vec {v_{f12}}\]

Collisions in One Dimension
Elastic - Inelastic - Perfectly Inelastic
1. Elastic Collision
Definition: An elastic collision is a collision in which the total kinetic energy after the collision is equal to the total kinetic energy before the collision.
It occurs only when no part of the kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy during the collision.
During the collision, kinetic energy is first converted to potential energy accompanied by a repulsive reaction force between the objects,
and then it is converted back to kinetic energy distributed among the objects according to their masses.
Note: In the real world, most collisions result in the loss of kinetic energy as heat and sound.
Therefore, truly elastic physical collisions are rare. However, some physical systems lose relatively little kinetic energy,
so they can be approximated as elastic collisions. The most common examples are the collision of billiard balls or pendulum balls.
In these cases, the energy lost is so negligible that it can be well approximated by assuming all kinetic energy is conserved during the collision.
Kinetic energy before and after the collision must be equal
\[K_{i1}+K_{i2}=K_{f1}+K_{f2}\]
\[\frac{1}{2}m_1{v_{i1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2{v_{i2}}^2=\frac{1}{2}m_1{v_{f1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2{v_{f2}}^2\]
Momentum before and after the collision must be equal:
\[\vec P_{i1}+\vec P_{i2}=\vec P_{f1}+\vec P_{f2}\]
\[m_1.\vec {v_{i1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{i2}}=m_1.\vec {v_{f1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{f2}}\]
Practical Applications:
- Molecular collisions in ideal gases.
- Billiard games (approximately).
2. Inelastic Collision
Definition: A collision in which kinetic energy is not conserved (some of it is lost as heat or deformation), but total momentum is conserved.
Kinetic energy before the collision is greater than kinetic energy after the collision
\[K_{i1}+K_{i2}>K_{f1}+K_{f2}\]
\[\frac{1}{2}m_1.{v_{i1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2.{v_{i2}}^2>\frac{1}{2}m_1.{v_{f1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2.{v_{f2}}^2\]
Momentum before and after the collision must be equal:
\[\vec P_{i1}+\vec P_{i2}=\vec P_{f1}+\vec P_{f2}\]
\[m_1.\vec {v_{i1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{i2}}=m_1.\vec {v_{f1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{f2}}\]
Practical Applications:
- Car collisions (where the structure deforms).
- A mud ball hitting the ground.
3. Perfectly Inelastic Collision
Definition: A special case of inelastic collision where the two objects stick together and move as one body.
This results in the two objects sticking together and moving at the same velocity after the collision.
Kinetic energy is dissipated due to friction and the merging of the two objects.
Kinetic energy before the collision is greater than kinetic energy after the collision
\[K_{i1}+K_{i2}>K_{f12}\]
\[\frac{1}{2}m_1.{v_{i1}}^2+\frac{1}{2}m_2.{v_{i2}}^2>\frac{1}{2}(m_1+m_2).{v_{f12}}^2\]
Momentum before and after the collision must be equal:
\[\vec P_{i1}+\vec P_{i2}=\vec P_{f12}\]
\[m_1.\vec {v_{i1}}+m_2.\vec {v_{i2}}=(m_1+m_2).\vec {v_{f12}}\]

When the collision occurs in two dimensions, such as in billiards where the game is played on a flat surface (the table),
the laws of elastic collision are the same. This can be proven using vectors for velocities to calculate momentum before and after the collision.
If the collision is elastic, we use the kinetic energy law. In all cases,
the laws are calculated and applied on each coordinate axis separately.
