Hooke's Law

\[ PE_s = \frac{1}{2} F \cdot X = \frac{1}{2} k X^2 \]

\[ W = \int F \, dx = \int kx \, dx = \frac{1}{2} k x^2 \]

1 \( m_1 = 0.01 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)
2 \( m_2 = 0.02 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)
3 \( m_3 = 0.06 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)
4 \( m_4 = 0.03 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)

\[ \text{الميل} = \frac{\Delta F}{\Delta L} = k \]

\[ PE_s = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{القاعدة} \times \text{الارتفاع} = \frac{1}{2} F \times X = \frac{1}{2} k X^2 \]

🔧 Hooke's Law and Its Applications

Elasticity - Springs - Elastic Potential Energy - Practical Experiments

📖 Historical Introduction

The English scientist Robert Hooke formulated this law in 1676. It is one of the fundamental principles in the mechanics of elastic materials. The law expresses the linear relationship between the force of deformation and the deformation itself within the elastic range of objects.

📐 Mathematical Formula

\[ F = -k \Delta x \]

Where:

  • \( F \): Restoring force (N)
  • \( k \): Spring constant (N/m)
  • \( \Delta x \): Displacement from equilibrium (m)
⚠️ Note: The negative sign indicates that the force opposes the direction of displacement (restoring force).

🔹 Practical Applications

  • Vehicle suspension systems
  • Spring scales and measuring devices
  • Mechanical properties of materials
  • Medical engineering applications (e.g., orthodontics)

🔋 Elastic Potential Energy

Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in elastic objects. It depends on the position of the object's particles relative to each other within the system.

Springs are elastic objects that possess elastic potential energy when compressed or stretched.

\[ PE_s = \frac{1}{2} F \cdot X = \frac{1}{2} k X^2 \]

Where:

  • \( PE_s \) = Elastic potential energy (J)
  • \( F \) = Applied force (N)
  • \( X \) = Displacement (m)
  • \( k \) = Spring constant (N/m)
💡 Note: When we apply a stretching force to a spring, the spring elongates. This work is converted into elastic potential energy. The greater the force, the greater the elongation and the greater the potential energy.

🔹 Practical Applications

  • Springs in mechanical systems
  • Car safety belts
  • Bows and arrows
  • Bicycle suspension systems

📊 Comparison Table of Different Materials

Material Elastic constant (k) N/m
Rubber 50 - 200
Steel 500 - 2000
Aluminum 200 - 500

📐 Mathematical Derivation

To derive the elastic energy equation:

\[ W = \int F \, dx = \int kx \, dx = \frac{1}{2} k x^2 \]

Work done on the spring = Area under the force-displacement curve

🧪 Experiment: Hanging Different Masses

In this experiment, we hang different masses on the spring and record the displacement each time.

\[ m_1 = 10g,\; m_2 = 20g,\; m_3 = 60g,\; m_4 = 30g \]

📊 Experiment Table

Trial Mass \( m \) (kg) Gravity \( g \) (m/s²) Force \( F \) (N) Elongation \( \Delta L \) (m)
1 \( m_1 = 0.01 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)
2 \( m_2 = 0.02 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)
3 \( m_3 = 0.06 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)
4 \( m_4 = 0.03 \) \( g = 10 \) \( F = ... \) \( \Delta L = ... \)

📊 Graph Analysis

When plotting the force-displacement graph, a straight line is produced. The slope of this line represents the spring constant according to Hooke's Law.

\[ \text{Slope} = \frac{\Delta F}{\Delta L} = k \]
Hooke's Law graph

The area under the curve represents the work done. This work is converted into potential energy, which is the elastic potential energy, equal to the area of the triangle.

\[ PE_s = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height} = \frac{1}{2} F \times X = \frac{1}{2} k X^2 \]
💡 Summary:
• Slope of the graph = spring constant \( k \)
• Area under the curve = elastic potential energy \( PE_s \)

📋 Hooke's Law Summary

Quantity Formula Unit
Restoring force \[ F = -k \Delta x \] Newton (N)
Elastic potential energy \[ PE_s = \frac{1}{2} k x^2 \] Joule (J)
Spring constant \[ k = \frac{F}{\Delta x} \] Newton/meter (N/m)

🔹 Important Notes

  • 🔸 Hooke's Law is valid only within the elastic limit of the material.
  • 🔸 The negative sign means that the force opposes the displacement.
  • 🔸 Elastic potential energy is directly proportional to the square of displacement.
  • 🔸 The spring constant \( k \) depends on the material and dimensions of the spring.
